To the rich man, Lazarus was part of the landscape. If ever he did notice him,
it never struck him that Lazarus had anything to do with him. He was simply unaware of his presence, or,
if he was aware of it, he had no sense of responsibility for it... A man may well be condemned,
not for doing something, but for doing nothing.
Most of us were taught that God would love us if and when we
change. In fact, God loves you so that you can change. What
empowers change, what makes you desirous of change is the
experience of love. It is the inherent experience of love that
becomes the engine of change.
Some Christians try to go to heaven alone, in solitude. But
believers are not compared to bears or lions or other animals that
wander alone. Those who belong to Christ are sheep in this
respect, that they love to get together. Sheep go in flocks, and so
do God’s people.
The greatest proof of Christianity for others is not how far a man
can logically analyze his reasons for believing, but how far in
practice he will stake his life on his belief.
There is no situation so chaotic that God cannot from that situation,
create something that is surpassingly good. He did it at the creation. He did it at the cross.
He is doing it today.
Suppose you had all the knowledge in the libraries, all the power
of the world's leaders, all the gold in the world, all the sex you
wanted. What would all that profit you if you lost your soul? The
soul must really be worth something if it's worth more than that -
and God thought it was worth sending His son to die for...I'm
counting totally and completely on the Lord Jesus Christ, and not
on Billy Graham. I'm not going to heaven because I've read the
Bible, nor because I've preached to a lot of people. I'm going to
heaven because of what Christ did. - Billy Graham
If our faith is not relevant to our daily life in the world and in the parish,
then it is no use; and if we cannot be Christians in our work, in the neighborhood,
in our political decisions, then we had better stop being Christians. A piety reserved for Sundays is no
message for this age.
Give me a stout heart to bear my own burdens. Give me a willing heart to bear the burdens of others.
Give me a believing heart to cast all burdens upon Thee, O Lord.
The renewal of our natures is a work of great importance.
It is not to be done in a day. We have not only a new house to build up, but an
old one to pull down.
When God turns away from us because of selfishness, it is not rejection.
Rather, it is an invitation to follow Him to a place we would rather not go.
If ye keep watch over your hearts, and listen for the Voice of God and learn of Him,
in one short hour ye can learn more from Him than ye could learn from Man in a thousand years.
No one goes through life unscathed. Sooner or later someone
you trust will betray you, a business deal will go south leaving
you in a financial crisis, illness strikes or someone you love dies.
Make peace with your pain. When you have been wounded it is
critical to turn your pain into an ally. Embrace it and learn from it.
Remember God has a long history of turning life's tragedies into
opportunities for personal growth and development.
Worry is allowing problems and distress to come between us and
the heart of God. It is the view that God has somehow lost control
of the situation and we cannot trust Him. A legitimate concern
presses us closer to the heart of God and causes us to lean and
trust on Him all the more.
Don't just keep the faith...spread it around.
There is a sacredness in tears. They are not the mark of weakness,
but of power. They speak more eloquently than 10,000 tongues.
They are the messengers of overwhelming grief, of deep contrition
and of unspeakable love.
God does not lead His children around hardship, but leads them straight through hardship.
But He leads! And amidst the hardship, He is nearer to them than ever before.
Faith is not only a commitment to the promises of Christ; faith is also a commitment to the demands of Christ.
God always stands ready to forgive our sinful mistakes, but not
even forgiveness can change the past. What's done is done.
Forgiveness does, however, change us and it does unlock the
future.
You will know that forgiveness has begun when you recall those
who hurt you and feel the power to wish them well.
